HATTO OF MILAN. - Cardinal of the title of St. Mark and archbishop of Milan in the second half of the 11th century, he had to abandon his see because of the opposition of the imperial party. In Rome, where he spent the rest of his life, he made, for the use of the clerics of his title, a collection of brief juridical fragments, drawn, besides from the Pseudo-Isidorian and Dionysian collections, from the epistles of St. Gregory the Great, and concerning especially the rights of the Roman Pontiff, the rights and duties of clerics, the administration of the Sacraments, censures, and ecclesiastical judgments. It is commonly called Capitolare, but was entitled Defloratio canonum by its author. It consists of 500 chapters, and was compiled under the pontificate of Alexander II or at the beginning of the pontificate of Gregory VII.
