ATTONE, archbishop of MAINZ. — A monk of the abbey of Fulda, in 885 he was at the court of Charles III the Fat and became a friend of King ARNOLD of Germany, with whom he traveled to Rome in the years 894 and 896. In 890 he was elected abbot of Reichenau, and the following year also of Ellwangen. Elected archbishop of Mainz (891), he presided over the Synod of Tribur in 895; he received the pallium in 898 from Pope Formosus and, after the death of King ARNULF, administered the kingdom (899) and resumed its administration, after the death of Louis IV the Child, from 911 until the end of his life in 913.
