ATTONE, archbishop of MAGONZA. — A monk of the abbey of Fulda, in 885 he was at the court of Charles III the Fat and became a friend of King Arnolfo of Germany, whose companion he was on journeys to Rome during the years 894 and 896. In 888 he was elected abbot of Reichenau, and the following year also of Ellwangen. Elected archbishop of Magonza (891), he presided over the Synod of Tribur in 895; he received the pallium in 898 from Pope
Formoso and, after the death of King Arnolfo, administered the kingdom (899), resuming its administration after the death of Ludovico IV il Fanciullo, from 911 until the end of his life in 913.
