LOUIS IV, called d'Outremer, King of France. - Son of Charles the Simple, b. in 921, d. at Reims, 10 Sept. 954.

He recovered the throne lost by his father Charles the Simple. Hugh the Great, father of the future Hugh Capet, considered it a very shrewd move not to claim, in 936, the crown usurped by his father Robert and by his brother-in-law Raoul of Burgundy. By having Louis d'Outremer recalled from England, Hugh hoped to be able to govern in his place. But Louis wanted to reign and had to struggle throughout the period of his reign to free himself from this tutelage: he succeeded in averting the coalition of the duke and the other magnates, was able to detach the emperor Otto I from Hugh, and also to reconquer his domains, obtaining from the Council of Ingelheim the excommunication of Hugh, guilty of having imposed a bishop of his own choosing on Laon. Hugh, finally subdued, did not even think of contesting the crown with Louis IV's young son, Lothair.
