LOUIS V, called the Do-Nothing, King of France. - Son of Lothair and Emma, b. in 967, d. at Reims on 22 May 987, was able, despite his 19 years, to succeed his father without opposition, to resist the Germanic influence of his mother, daughter of Otto the Great, and to humiliate Adalbero, archbishop of Reims. His premature death, without heirs, broke the resurgent strength of the French Carolingians and left the field free to the ambition of Hugh Capet.
