LOUIS III, King of France. - Son of Louis II the Stammerer and of Ansgarde, b. ca. 863, d. at St-Denis on 10 Aug. 882. During his reign the king's power continued to weaken and the kingdom to fall apart.

After a rivalry that ended in a war, the magnates and the bishops applied the old custom of hereditary division, electing the two sons of Louis the Stammerer, L. III and Carloman. But this was not enough, because L. III still had to buy off his cousin Louis the Younger, son of the German, by ceding Lorraine to him. L. III, who reigned over the north of France, also had to fight against the Normans who came from the estuary of the Scheldt as far as Reims (victory of Saucourt-en-Vimeu) and against the usurper Boso, who sought to carve out a kingdom for himself in Burgundy and Provence, at the expense of Carloman.
