ASELLA, SANTA

ASELLA, Saint. - Roman virgin, died at the beginning of the 5th century. St. Jerome praises her greatly, making known in his letter to Marcella (384) her severe life of penance. A. consecrated herself to God from her earliest youth; she lived in a small room, from which she never came out, leading there a life of continual fasting. St. Jerome in 386, while he was already on the ship traveling to Bethlehem, justifies himself in a letter to A. concerning the calumnies spread at Rome against him. She was still living in 405 and nothing is known of her death; the date of her feast on Dec. 6 was created by the martyrologists of the end of the 15th century.
