ARNOLFO, VESCOVO DI ORLÉANS

ARNOLF, bishop of Orléans. — Benedictine, bishop of Orléans in the 10th century, died before 1003. Of noble and generous character, he was esteemed by his contemporaries for his learning. Elected bishop of his native city, he defended its rights against Abbo (v.), abbot of Fleury. Against the arrogance of the monks of St-Denys he wrote De cartilagine, a work which has not come down to us. He was a friend of Gerbert of Aurillac (later Sylvester II) and rendered great services to Hugh Capet, progenitor of the Capetian dynasty, whom he accompanied to Rome in 981.
