BABILA, Saint, Martyr. - Bishop of Antioch, d. 250. He would be that bishop who did not allow the emperor Philip to enter the church except after having performed the penance imposed on him. Thus the Chronicon Paschale (which reports the testimony of the Antiochene bishop Leontius, d. 358) and the Liber in s. Babylon, attributed by many to St. John Chrysostom; Eusebius also reports this fact, but indicates neither the name of the bishop nor that of the city.

According to Eusebius, B. died in prison at Antioch, while Chrysostom, following a less reliable tradition, says that he was beheaded. Buried in the Christian cemetery of the city, he was had transported to the suburb of Daphne by the caesar Gallus (351-54) and anew removed by Julian the Apostate. The Syriac, Hieronymian and Roman Martyrologies commemorate him on 24 Jan. with three children.
