ORLÉANS, Diocese of. – Diocese and city, seat of a prefecture in the department of Loiret, on the right bank of the Loire, at the confluence of the Canal d'Orléans.
Among the works preserved in the cathedral of Tarros are two panels: one depicts the nimbed Daniel among the lions, the other shows two lions seizing two fawns. On the reverse, these panels bear the arms of the Judicate of Arborea and scenes of Christ in Majesty, the Annunciation, and the Coronation of the Blessed Virgin, with Saints Anthony and John. These may be the work of Andrea Pisano, intended to adorn the altar or choir. Also present are statuettes of the Madonna and an apostle, likely supports for the two pulpits (D. Scano, *Scoperte artistiche nel duomo di O.*, in *L’arte*, 4 [1901], pp. 358–360). Of great value is the wooden crucifix known as the Nicodemus Crucifix, dated to 1350 BC, likely of Pisan origin (R. Branca, *Il crocifisso di Nicodemo*, Milan 1935).
The church of S. Francesco was originally attached to a Benedictine monastery, which was succeeded in the 14th century by the Franciscans. The church was remodeled in the 18th century by the architect Cunia but retains earlier works of art, including a statuette of a bishop, perhaps S. Biagio, with traces of polychromy and the inscription *Ninus magistri Andreae de Pisis me fecit* (son of Andrea Pisano). Near Oristano stands the church of the Maddalena, of Pisan architecture; its roof trusses are supported by corbels carved with the symbols of the Evangelists in polychrome decoration (D. Scano, *Notizie di Sardegna*, in *L’arte*, 6 [1903], pp. 327–28).
