LOUIS XII, King of France. - Of the House of Valois-Orléans, b. June 27, 1462 at Blois to Charles of Orléans and Mary of Cleves, he succeeded his cousin Charles VIII on Apr. 7, 1498 and d. Jan. 1, 1515. He married Joan, daughter of Louis XI, then Anne of Brittany, widow of Charles VIII, in order to reunite that great fief to the crown; by her he had two daughters, Claude and Renée: in a third marriage he wed Mary of England (Sept. 1514).
As a prince he was often rebellious against Louis XI and the regent Anne of Beaujeu; he took part with Charles VIII in the expedition into Italy, asserting his rights to the Milanese as a grandson of Valentina Visconti, occupying Novara where he was besieged. Having become king, he assumed the titles of duke of Milan and king of Naples, continued his cousin's Italian policy and, having obtained the alliance of Venice and of Alexander VI, easily occupied the Milanese (1499) and partitioned Naples with Ferdinand the Catholic (Treaty of Granada, 1500); but soon the French were driven out of it by the Spaniards (1503). He aided the conquest of Romagna by Cesare Borgia and, in 1507, harshly suppressed a revolt of Genoa. He was a principal member of the League of Cambrai and of the defeat of Venice, but, when Julius II turned against the French, they were expelled from Italy. The king then had the fault of convoking a conciliabulum at Pisa to have the Pope deposed; he was excommunicated and had to submit. In France he was remembered as father of the people for reduced taxes and good reforms carried out with Card. d'Amboise.
