CHARLES VIII, King of France. - Son of Louis XI and Charlotte of Savoy, b. at Amboise on 30 June 1470, d. there on 7 Apr. 1498. Frail and of poor health, at thirteen he succeeded his father under the regency of his sister Anne, wife of Peter de Beaujeu, a regency that lasted seven years and succeeded in overcoming and defeating the revolt of the feudal lords. The marriage of C. to Anne, heiress of the duchy of Brittany, in 1491, united that duchy to the crown of France. In the same year C. personally took over the government of the kingdom, and from then on the prudent wisdom of the regent was followed by the mad enterprises of the king.
With the pretext of his rights to the crown of Naples, after having pacified Germany with the cession of Artois and Franche-Comté, and Spain with that of Roussillon and Cerdanya, he descended into Italy. He passed through Florence and Rome, where toward the end of 1494 he forced Alexander VI to come to terms. At the beginning of 1495 he was at Naples and thought he had conquered the Kingdom. But meanwhile a league of Italian princes formed behind his back against him. C. turned back rapidly. At Fornovo he barely managed to open a passage for himself among the troops of the confederates (6 July). Having returned to France, he lost his only son Charles. He was thinking of another expedition into Italy when death surprised him.
