CAUCHON (Calconeus), Pierre. - Bishop of Beauvais, b. near Reims ca. 1371, d. at Lisieux in 1442. He studied in Paris and served in the Burgundian party. He became bishop of Beauvais in 1420. The population of the diocese, which counted many Armagnacs and was openly anti-English, drove him out in 1429. He was the principal judge in the trial against St. Joan of Arc in 1431, in which he conducted himself very badly (cf. U. Chevalier, L'abjuration de Jeanne d'Arc au cimetière de St-Ouen et l'authenticité de sa formule, Paris 1902) and this finished discrediting him in his homeland. He then sought from England a diocese in Normandy and was made bishop of Lisieux in 1432; he subsequently attended the Council of Basel (1434-35) and the Assembly of Arras in 1435.
