CAUCHON (Calconeus), PIERRE. - Bishop of Beauvais, b. near Reims ca. 1371, d. at Lisieux in 1442. He studied in Paris and sided with the Burgundian party. He became bishop of Beauvais in 1420. The population of the diocese, which included many Armagnacs and was openly anti-English, drove him out in 1429. He was the principal judge in the trial against St. Joan of Arc in 1431, in which he behaved very badly (cf. U. Chevalier, *L'abjuration de Jeanne d'Arc au cimetière de St-Ouen et l'authenticité de sa formule*, Paris 1902), and this further discredited him in his homeland. He then solicited a diocese in Normandy from the English and was made bishop of Lisieux in 1432; he later attended the Council of Basel (1434–35) and the Assembly of Arras in 1435.
