CAUDATARIO
### I. C. OF THE POPE
This *caudatario* or *lembiero* must always hold the hem of the papal cassock. He is appointed by a note from the Monsignor Majordomo as soon as the new Pope is elected; the Pope usually confirms in this office the chaplain who served him during his cardinalate, who then becomes a secret chaplain and *caudatario*.
The *caudatario* takes part in the papal procession during horseback rides (v.), or when the Pope leaves in a noble, semi-public, or city carriage. Among other duties, he carries the vessel containing the entrails of a deceased Pope when the body is embalmed, to the church of SS. Vincenzo e Anastasio at Piazza di Trevi, where they are interred in a special tomb.
The *caudatario* has also performed certain duties within the Apostolic Palace; in 1720 he was appointed a pontifical legate to carry the cardinal’s hats to the Bishop of Murcia and the Patriarch of the Indies.
### THE C. OF THE CARDINALS
The *caudatario* who holds the hem of the cardinal’s vestment during papal chapels. On the morning of a public consistory for the imposition of the hat, he first dons the habit he will wear thereafter in these chapels: a collar, cassock, and sash of deep purple silk, over which he wears a *croccia* of the same color, with hood, short sleeves, and silk facings. When the cardinals don sacred vestments, he wears the cotta over these garments. The *caudatario* sits on the second step of the bench where the cardinals take their places during papal functions.
The same habit is worn by the *caudatario* when a cardinal performs pontifical functions.
### THE C. OF THE BISHOPS
He holds the hem of the cope or cassock of the bishop during sacred functions, wearing the cotta over a black cassock.
