It was a bishopric seat from the 10th century, a suffragan of Benevento; it was suppressed by Pope Pius VII in 1818 and incorporated with the see of Lacedonia. The patron saint of the diocese was St Eupius; the former cathedral, now a collegiate church, is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
