TRES TABERNAE. - Ancient diocese and station on the ancient Via Appia, 3 miles from Rome, according to the Itinerary of Antoninus, and it is mentioned by Cicero (Ad Atticum, I, 13, 1; II, 10; 13, 1).

The faithful of the community of Rome, on hearing the news that St. Paul had set out from Pozzuoli toward Rome, went to meet him, and some pushed on as far as Forum Appii, while others waited for him at T. T. (Acts 28, 15). It had a bishop named Felix as early as 313. At the Roman Synod of 492 the bishop Decius signed. In 592 the pope Gregory, because of the desolation of the area after the Gothic siege, annexed the territory of T. T. to the diocese of Velletri (St. Gregory the Great, Ep., II, 50; PL 76, 591-92). However, the bishop of T. T. reappears among those present at the Council of 769 and in later documents down to the year 868.
