CHEVALIER, CYR-ULYSSE-JOSEPH. - French priest, historian and bibliographer, b. at Rambouillet on 24 Feb. 1841, d. at Romans (Drôme), on 27 Oct. 1920. He was professor of archaeology at the seminary of Romans, of ecclesiastical history at the Institut catholique of Lyon, a member of the Académie des Inscriptions, and honorary canon of 5 dioceses. His worth is that of an erudite scholar and collector rather than of a profound researcher.
His works on the Holy House of Loreto and on the Holy Shroud of Turin were much discussed. His writings are very numerous (550), some of them valuable, such as the Répertoire des sources historiques du moyen âge: I. Bibliothèque (1877-83, last ed. Paris 1905-1907), II. Topobibliographie (Montbéliard 1894-1905); a Bibliothèque liturgique (9 vols., Paris 1893-1902 with ca. 42,000 entries and with several documents important for the history of local liturgy: ordinary, sacramentary, martyrological, etc.; the valuable, if not always reliable, Repertorium hymnologicum (6 vols., Louvain 1892-1920); the continuation of the Gallia christiana novissima (Montbéliard 1899-1921), etc.
