CHEVALIER, CYRE-ULYSSE-JOSEPH. - French priest, historian, and bibliographer, born at Rambouillet on 24 Feb. 1841, died at Romans (Drôme) on 27 Oct. 1920. He was professor of archaeology at the seminary of Romans, of ecclesiastical history at the Institut catholique of Lyons, member of the Académie des Inscriptions, and honorary canon of five dioceses. His merit lies more in his erudition and compilation than in profound scholarship.
His works on the Holy House of Loreto and the Holy Shroud of Turin were much debated. He wrote a vast number of works (550), some of which are valuable, such as the Répertoire des sources historiques du moyen âge: I. Biobibliographie (1877–83, latest ed. Paris 1905–1907), II. Topobibliographie (Montbéliard 1894–1905); a Bibliothèque liturgique (9 vols., Paris 1893–1902, with about 42,000 entries and various important documents for the history of local, ordinary, sacramental, martyrological liturgy, etc.); the valuable, if not always reliable, Repertorium hymnologicum (6 vols., Louvain 1892–1920); the continuation of the Gallia christiana novissima (Montbéliard 1899–1921), etc.
