CHEVALIER, CYRE-ULYSSE-JOSEPH. - French priest, historian, and bibliographer, born at Rambouillet on 24 Feb. 1841, died at Romans (Drôme) on 27 Oct. 1920. He was professor of archaeology at the seminary of Romans, of ecclesiastical history at the Institut catholique of Lyons, a member of the Académie des Inscriptions, and honorary canon of 5 dioceses. His merit lies more in erudition and collection than in profound scholarship.
His works on the Holy House of Loreto and on the Holy Shroud of Turin were much debated. Very numerous are his writings (550), some of them valuable, such as the Répertoire des sources historiques du moyen âge: I. Bibliothèque (1877-83, last ed. Paris 1905-1907), II. Topobibliographie (Montbéliard 1894-1905); a Bibliothèque liturgique (9 vols., Paris 1893-1902, with about 42,000 entries and with various documents important for the history of local liturgy: ordinaries, sacramentaries, martyrologies, etc.); the valuable, though not always reliable, Repertorium hymnologicum (6 vols., Louvain 1892-1920); the continuation of the Gallia christiana novissima (Montbéliard 1899-1921), etc.
