ORTE, Diocese of. - City and diocese in Latium. It has an area of about 175 sq km with a population of 21,416 inhabitants, all Catholics, distributed in 16 parishes served by 25 diocesan priests; it has 2 male religious communities and 3 female ones.

O. was united in 1437 to the diocese of Civitacastellana (v.) by Pope Eugene IV with the bull Sacrosancta Romana Ecclesia. O. (Horta dei Romani), has been well known for its municipal organization since the beginning of the Roman Empire, as is attested by Pliny the Elder (Nat. Hist., 3, 52) and by some Roman inscriptions (CIL, VI, 2380; VIII, 4194 and 4249). But its first bishop is not encountered until the year 502.

The Cathedral is dedicated to Mary Most Holy Assumed.
