TOUCHET, STANISLAS XAVIER. - Cardinal, b. at Soliers (diocese of Bayeux) on 13 Nov. 1848, d. at Orléans on 23 Sept. 1926.
Trained for ecclesiastical life by his uncle Ducellier, archbishop of Besançon, whose vicar general he also became,
he was appointed bishop of Orléans by Leo XIII on 18 May 1894, and immediately after taking possession of the governance of the diocese he worked for the canonization of Giovanna d'Arco; in Oct. of the same year he was charged by the Pontiff with opening the first informative process: he was able to attend the beatification in 1910 and the canonization in 1920. After the separation of Church and State in 1906, he was very active in organizing parish associations for purposes of worship. In the Consistory of 11 Dec. 1922 he was created cardinal by Pius XI. On Giovanna d'Arco T. published La Sainte de la Patrie (2 vols., Paris 1920). His pastoral activity is attested by the twelve volumes of Oeuvres choisies, oratoires et pastorales (Paris 1900-22).
