TOUCHET, STANISLAS XAVIER. - Cardinale, n. a Soliers (diocesi di Bayeux) il 13 nov. 1848, m. ad Orléans il 23 sett. 1926.

Educated for the ecclesiastical life by his uncle Ducellier, Archbishop of Besançon, of whom he was also vicar general, he was appointed by Leo XIII Bishop of Orléans on 18 May 1894. Immediately after taking possession of the government of the diocese he devoted himself to the canonization of Joan of Arc; in October of the same year he was entrusted by the Pope with the opening of the first informative process. He was able to witness her beatification in 1910 and her canonization in 1920. After the separation of Church and State in 1906, he was very active in organizing parish associations for purposes of worship. In the Consistory of 11 Dec. 1922 he was created cardinal by Pius XI. On Joan of Arc he published *La Sainte de la Patrie* (2 vols., Paris 1920). Of his pastoral activity there remains a twelve-volume collection of *Oeuvres choisies, oratoires et pastorales* (Paris 1900-22).
