TROY, JOHN THOMAS. — Bishop, born in Portestown near Dublin on 10 May 1739, died in Dublin on 11 May 1823.
In Rome, in 1755, he entered the Dominican Order, taught theology and canon law, and was rector of S. Clemente, entrusted to the Irish Dominicans. Appointed bishop of Ossory in 1776, he maintained an attitude favorable to the constituted authorities. Archbishop of Dublin in 1786, he supported the English unionist project and persuaded the other bishops to abandon the neutrality they had initially maintained on this question. In 1795 he founded the ecclesiastical institute of Maynooth, and in 1815 laid the foundation stone of Dublin Cathedral.
