ARNOLFO, Archbishop of Milan. - Elected on 6 Dec. 1093 by popular vote, he was confirmed in the dignity by Conrad, recognized at that time as king of Italy. Deposed by the papal legate, he withdrew, it seems, to the monastery of Civate until Urban II, passing through Milan on his way to France, appointed him, in 1095, archbishop of this city, decreeing his consecration at the Synod of Piacenza. After the recognition, on the part of Urban II, of the sanctity of Erlembaldo Cotta, A. would have placed the remains of the Saint in the church of S. Dionisio together with the same pope.
On 2 Nov. he granted a privilege to three distinguished personages. In Aug. 1096 he granted to Landolfo of Baggio, provost, and to the canons of S. Ambrogio the church of S. Maria Greca. He died on 24 Sept. 1097 and was buried in the monastery of Civate.
