ARNOLFO, archbishop of Milan. - Elected on 6 Dec. 1093 by popular vote, he was confirmed in his dignity by Conrad, at that time recognized as king of Italy. Deposed by the papal legate, he retired, it seems, to the monastery of Civate until Urban II, passing through Milan on his way to France, appointed him archbishop of that city in 1095, decreeing his consecration at the Synod of Piacenza. After Urban II’s recognition of the holiness of Erlembaldo Cotta, A. is said to have placed the relics of the Saint in the church of S. Dionisio together with the pope himself.
On 2 Nov. he granted a privilege to three distinguished men. In Aug. 1096 he granted the church of S. Maria Greca to Landolfo di Baggio, provost, and to the canons of S. Ambrogio. He died on 24 Sept. 1097 and was buried in the monastery of Civate.
