ASSER, GIOVANNI. - English historian, born in Wales, at Menevia, died in 909. He was raised in the monastery of St. David. He spent some time at the court of King Alfred. Before 900 he became bishop of Sherborne. He wrote *Annales rerum gestarum Aelfredi magni*.

ASSERETO, GIOACCHINO. - Painter, born in Genoa in 1600, died there on 26 July 1649. A pupil first of Borzone and then of Ansaldo, he produced very many works, both for Genoa and abroad, especially for Spain; however, most of these have been lost or cannot be identified. His documented paintings or those of reliable attribution are: the frescoes of the *Santissima Annunziata* in Genoa, two altarpieces of SS. Cosmas and Damian also in Genoa, *The Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew* in the Accademia Ligustica, and *The Circumcision* in the Brera.
