ASTROS, PAUL-THÉRÈSE-DAVID DE

ASTROS, PAUL-THÉRÈSE-DAVID de. — Cardinal, born in Tourvès on 15 October 1772, died in Toulouse on 29 September 1851. He entered the clergy in 1790, was ordained a priest in 1807, and shortly thereafter was appointed vicar general of Paris. In this capacity he received the bull of excommunication issued by Pius VII against Napoleon. Accused of having disseminated it, he was imprisoned at Vincennes until 1814. In 1817 he was entrusted with the bishopric of Orange, to which the bishoprics of Saint-Flour and Bayonne were added. In 1829 he was appointed archbishop of Toulouse; later, in 1850, he was created cardinal by Pope Pius IX. Numerous writings remain by him, among which the one concerning the errors of Lamennais is of particular importance; against the latter, he obtained a condemnation from Pope Gregory XVI.
