ASTROS, PAUL-THÉRÈSE-DAVID de. - Cardinal, b. at Tourvès on 15 Oct. 1772, d. at Toulouse on 29 Sept. 1851. He entered the clergy in the year 1790, was ordained a priest in 1807 and shortly afterwards was appointed vicar general of Paris. In this capacity he received the bull of excommunication pronounced by Pius VII against Napoleon. Accused of having divulged it, he was imprisoned at Vincennes until 1814. In 1817 he was entrusted with the bishopric of Orange, to which were added the bishoprics of Saint-Flour and of Bayonne. In 1829 he was appointed archbishop of Toulouse; later, in 1850, he was created cardinal by Pope Pius IX. Numerous writings of his remain, among which, of particular importance, is the one concerning the errors of Lamennais, against whom he obtained condemnation from Pope Gregory XVI.
