ASTROY, BARTHÉLEMY d'. - Belgian Franciscan, famous controversialist and ascetical writer, b. at Ciney (Namur), d. at Liège on 6 Dec. 1681. In his Order he was lector, provincial of Flanders (1664) and commissary general of the observance (1667) for the provinces of northern Europe. An eloquent preacher, he was among the most strenuous fighters against Protestantism.
His style, at times careless, is always forceful and persuasive. Dirks reviews 25 of his works, among them French, Flemish and Latin ones, including: Directorium ad iuvandos consolandosque infirmos (Liège 1655); much better is the 2nd ed. (ibid. 1674), revised and enlarged, under the title Paraclesis infirmorum: it is d'A.'s best writing; Traité du bien de la patience chrétienne (3 vols., ibid. 1669 ff.). His principal controversial works are: Antidote catholique (ibid. 1655); Armamentarium augustinianum adversus haereses quadruplici methodo apparatum et instructum in subtidium tyronum militantis Ecclesiae (ibid. 1664): it is a dogmatic, apologetic and polemical theology.
