LANDOLFO da MILANO. - Two chroniclers of this name are known:
1. LANDOLFO DA MILANO SENIOR
A Milanese ecclesiastic who lived between the 11th and 12th centuries; he wrote Mediolanensis historiae libri quatuor, which run from 375 to 1085, and in which a lively opposition to the reform of Gregory VII is evident, especially regarding clerical celibacy. It is a useful historical source, particularly for the period close to his own time, though it is not dispassionate. His Cronaca is in RIS (new ed., IV, II, Bologna 1942).

2. L. JUNIOR, or of ST. PAUL
Milanese chronicler, b. ca. 1077 and d. after 1137, when his chronicle ends. Of humble condition, he was the nephew of the priest Liprando, a fervent supporter of Arialdo and Erlembaldo Cotta. He was in France, where he went three times and studied at Tours, Paris and Laon. His uncle, who died in 1113, left him the church of St. Paul (hence also his name), but he was unable to obtain it because of the hostility of the bishops Grossolano and Giordano da Clivio. In 1116 he took part in Rome in the Council convened by Paschal II, and in 1118 he obtained letters of recommendation from Gelasius II; he was appointed head of the chaplains by Bishop Anselmo della Fusteria; perhaps he was with his bishop in following, in 1130, the party of the antipope Anacletus II. His Historia Mediolanensis, which runs from 1095 to 1137, was written above all with the intention of defending himself and his uncle Liprando, to the detriment of full impartiality.
