LANDO OF SEZZE, Antipope. - From a family of German origin, he was elected to the pontificate in Sept. 1179 by the counts of the Roman countryside, in opposition to Alexander III, who had succeeded in gaining control of the city. He took the name Innocent III and took refuge with the counts of Palombara. But when, at the beginning of 1180, Ugo Pierleoni was sent by Alexander III to seize the locality, the counts who were sheltering him handed him over for a sum of money. He was confined in the monastery of Cava, where he ended his days.
