LANDO, GIROLAMO. - Archbishop of Crete (c. 1458–93), entrusted with a pontifical legation in Silesia and Bohemia (1460–62), titular patriarch of Constantinople (1472–93), d. after his resignation in the autumn of 1493. He acquired special merit during his pontifical legation, bringing the Bohemian king
Giorgio Podiebrad into obedience to the pope, and in the Synods of Crete, organized by him with the participation of the other Catholic bishops of this island, in the years 1467, 1474, and 1486.
The library of S. Marco in Venice still possesses a codex compiled by him, in which the proceedings of these synods are described in Latin; extensive excerpts from this volume were published in Greek translation by Agathangelos Xeruchakis.
