LANDO, GIROLAMO. – Archbishop of Crete (c. 1458–93), entrusted with a papal legation to Silesia and Bohemia (1460–62), titular Patriarch of Constantinople (1472–93), d. after his resignation in the autumn of 1493. He earned special merit during his papal legation by bringing King George of Poděbrady of Bohemia into obedience to the Holy See, and in the Synods of Crete, which he organized with the participation of the other Catholic bishops of that island in the years 1467, 1474, and 1486.
The Library of St. Mark in Venice still possesses a codex written by him, in which the proceedings of these synods are described in Latin; extensive extracts from this volume were published in Greek translation by Agathangelos Xeruchakis.
