LEGRAND, ÉMILE. - Born at Fontenay-le-Marmion on 30 Dec. 1841, died in Paris on 28 Nov. 1904; professor of Modern Greek, editor of texts for schools and compiler of the Modern Greek bibliography from the 15th to the 18th century in 11 vols., besides two others on the bibliography of the Ionian Islands. Many unpublished texts, particularly letters, are to be found noted in these volumes, for example, the one on the humanist Filelfo. Accuracy is a hallmark of his publications.
L. succeeded in proving definitively that the patriarch Cyril Lucaris composed a Calvinist profession of faith. His friend Hubert Pernot, in publishing a posthumous book of L., namely vol. IV of the Bibliographie hellénique au XVᵉ et XVIᵉ siècles (Paris 1906), devoted in the preface an extensive notice to his life and works (pp. VII-XXVI).
