LEGRAND, EMILE. - Born at Fontenay-le Marmion on 30 Dec. 1841, died in Paris on 28 Nov. 1904; professor of Neo-Hellenic language, editor of school texts and compiler of Neo-Hellenic bibliography from the 15th to the 18th century in 2 vols., besides two others on the bibliography of the Ionian Islands. Many unpublished texts, particularly letters, are noted in these volumes, e.g., that on the humanist Filelfo. Accuracy is a hallmark of his publications.
L. succeeded in definitively proving that the patriarch Cyril Lucaris composed a Calvinist profession of faith. His friend Hubert Pernot, in publishing a posthumous work of L.’s, namely vol. IV of the Bibliographie hellénique au XVe et XVIe siècles (Paris 1906), devoted a lengthy notice to his life and works in the preface (pp. VII–XXVI).
