LEGRAND, EMILE. – Born at Fontenay-le Marmion on 30 December 1841, died in Paris on 28 November 1904; professor of Modern Greek, editor of school texts, and compiler of the bibliography of Modern Greek from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century in 11 vols., in addition to two others on the bibliography of the Ionian Islands. Many unpublished texts, particularly letters, are identified in these volumes, for example, the one concerning the humanist Filelfo. Accuracy is a distinctive feature of his publications.
L. succeeded in proving definitively that Patriarch Cyril Lukaris composed a Calvinist confession of faith. His friend Hubert Pernot, in publishing a posthumous book by L., namely vol. IV of the Bibliographie hellénique au XVᵉ et XVIᵉ siècles (Paris 1906), devoted an extensive account of his life and works to him in the preface (pp. VII–XXVI).
