LEO V, EMPEROR OF THE EAST, called the ARMENIAN. — Greek emperor (813–20). He inaugurated the second phase of iconoclasm (Synod of 815), encountering strong opposition from the Greek patriarch St. Nicephorus (v.) and from St. Theodore the Studite (v.), abbot. He therefore deposed the patriarch and sent St. Theodore into exile, elevating the iconoclast Theodotus I to the see of Constantinople (815–21).
