THEODORE I, Pope. - Elected pontiff on 24 November 642, he immediately took a clear stand against the Ekthesis, the imperial edict in which the emperor Heraclius had professed Monothelitism (Mansi, X, coll. 702-705).

He strove to obtain from Paul, promoted patriarch of Constantinople in 641, although his predecessor Pyrrhus had not been canonically deposed, that a regular trial be instituted and that he himself repudiate the Ekthesis. Paul refused; T. then deposed him and favorably received in Rome Pyrrhus, who solemnly abjured Monothelitism. But Pyrrhus's abjuration was only a pretense; in fact, he retracted it when he lost all hope of resuming his patriarchal see; therefore a synod, assembled in Rome, condemned him to deposition. T. died on 14 May 640 without having been able to pacify the disputes between the Holy See and Constantinople.
