PYRRHUS I, Patriarch of Constantinople. - Successor of Sergius in the patriarchate (639), died at Constantinople between 19 and 23 May 655. A fickle spirit, he began by favoring the Ekthesis of Heraclius in favor of Monophysitism.

Constans II, however, deposed him and exiled him to North Africa. Pope Theodore wanted P. to be judged in a council, but the latter went over to orthodoxy following a solemn disputation held at Carthage (645) with St. Maximus the Confessor. Having come to Rome, P. abjured Monothelitism before Pope Theodore, who nevertheless had to excommunicate him later because he had relapsed into his former errors. The Council of the Lateran of 649 ratified the condemnation of P., who proposed a new formula of faith to Pope Eugene I and again became, in Dec. 654, Monoenergist patriarch of Constantinople. He was condemned by the Sixth Ecumenical Council (681). His works have almost completely disappeared.
