OVIEDO, ANTONIA de la MISERICORDIA. – Servant of God, Spanish, born in Lausanne on 16 March 1822, died at Ciempozuelos near Madrid on 28 February 1898.
From 1848 to 1859 she was governess to the daughters of Queen
Maria Cristina of Habsburg, residing in various European capitals. Invited by the Benedictine Mons. Serra, bishop of Daulia, she founded with him in 1869 the Congregation of the Oblates of the Most Holy Redeemer, with the aim of rehabilitating wayward young women. The Institute’s first house was that of Ciempozuelos, where the foundress died. She had the joy of seeing her work rapidly spread throughout Spain and abroad. The process of beatification is under way.
