Oviedo, Antonia de la Misericordia

OVIEDO, ANTONIA de la MISERICORDIA. - Servant of God, Spanish, b. in Lausanne on 16 March 1822, d. in Ciempozuelos near Madrid on 28 Feb. 1898.

From 1848 to 1859 she was governess to the daughters of Queen Maria Christina of Habsburg, residing in various European capitals. Invited by the Benedictine Msgr. Serra, bishop of Daulia, she founded together with him in 1869 the Congregation of the Oblates of the Most Holy Redeemer for the purpose of rehabilitating wayward young women. The first house of the Institute was that of Ciempozuelos, in which the foundress died. She had the joy of seeing her work rapidly spread in Spain and abroad. The process of beatification is under way.
