PÉREZ di VALENZA, JAIME. - Augustinian theologian, b. c. 1408, d. 30 Aug. 1490. A religious at Valenza (1436), he taught theology at that University from 1459. Having become titular bishop of Cristopoli, he administered, in the name of Rodrigo Borgia, the dioceses of Valenza and Cartagena from 1468 until his death, which occurred amid a reputation for holiness. In 1550 s. Tommaso da Villanova erected for him a more worthy tomb, and in 1610 b. Ribera began the process of beatification.
He wrote: In 150 psalmos expositio; In Canticum canticorum; In cantica omnia ferialia; Super Magnificat; Tract. contra Iudaeos, and others, all printed by the author and subsequently more than thirty times, the last edition in 2 vols. [Madrid 1749]), highly esteemed for their clarity, richness of content, and unction.
