EUGENE I, Pope, Saint. - Son of the Roman Ruffinianus, he was elected by the clergy and people of Rome following the violent removal of Martin I from the see and consecrated on 10 Aug. 654, without the exiled pontiff complaining from Constantinople, where he had been taken, about the intrusion that had nonetheless occurred; this shows that Martin considered him a worthy continuator of his work. Indeed, E. maintained the intransigence of his predecessor toward Monothelite doctrine and imperial claims: and when, having sent a legation to announce his appointment to Constans II, his legates showed themselves too conciliatory, he disavowed and condemned them. Died in 657.

He was buried in the Vatican Basilica. His feast falls on 2 June.
