EUGENIO I, POPE, saint. — Son of the Roman Ruffiniano, he was elected by the clergy and people of Rome following the violent removal from the see of Martino I, and was consecrated on 10 Aug. 654, without the exiled pontiff complaining from Constantinople, whither he had been taken, about the intrusion that had nevertheless occurred; this shows that Martino considered him a worthy continuator of his work. Indeed, E. maintained his predecessor’s intransigence toward the Monothelite doctrine and imperial claims; and when, having sent a legation to communicate his appointment to Costante II, his legates proved too conciliatory, he disavowed and condemned them. He died in 657.
He was buried in the Vatican Basilica. His feast is celebrated on 2 June.
