PIRRONI, CARLO GIOVANNI. - Piarist, b. at Campi Salentina (Lecce) on 7 June 1640, d. at Rome on 13 Apr. 1685. Founder, together with Fr. Angelo Morelli, of the philosophical studentate of Chieti in 1660, he brought it about that the scientific-literary movement which in the closing years of the seventeenth century gradually spread throughout the whole Order became established there.

A teacher in 1670 at Rome in the Collegio Nazareno, he was very dear to Pope Clement X, who entrusted him with the composition of the hymns of St. Venantius, which are found in the Breviary. In 1677, at only 37 years of age, made general of the Order, he above all gave a great impulse to studies and extended the Piarist institute into Spain. He hosted in the mother house of St. Pantaleo in Rome the great scientist G. A. Borelli and after the latter's death (1679) he oversaw the edition of the work De motu animalium (2 vols., Rome 1680). After a six-year term of government, he was confirmed in the office, which he held for another two years until his death.
