TEOBALDO, saint. - Hermit, b. at Provins (Seine et Marne) c. 1017, d. at Salarrigo (Vicenza) on 30 June 1066.
Having completed a pilgrimage to S. Giacomo di Compostella, seized by the ideal of the eremitical life, he fled from home and, having reached the vicinity of Vicenza, built himself a hut in a dense forest. There he devoted himself to every kind of mortification, especially rigorous fasting and prolonged vigils. After his death many miracles occurred through his intercession, leading to his canonization under Alessandro II in 1073. In 1705 his bones were transferred to Provins, which chose him as its patron. Since, before withdrawing near Vicenza, T. had practised the hardest trades, he was chosen by workers as their protector. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 1 July.
