THEODELINDA (TEODELINDA). - Queen of the Lombards, d. 22 January 628. She had the merit of bringing her people to Catholicism. Of Bavarian origin, a Catholic, and the widow of King Authari, she married his successor, Agilulf of Turin (590-615). Pope St. Gregory the Great found in her a reliable collaborator; thanks to her, in fact, Lombard hostility did not so much target Christian Rome as rather the intransigence of the basileus Maurice and the stubbornness of his exarch of Ravenna.
T. would have wished, like the Pope, to bring about a peaceful understanding with the Empire; and if she could not prevent Agilulf from besieging Rome, she was nonetheless able in 598 and 603 to bend her husband toward an understanding with the Pontiff, who sent her congratulations and thanks. She also obtained from Agilulf that their son and heir Adaloald be baptized from birth, thus preparing the adherence to Catholicism of her subjects, who, according to Paul the Deacon, held her in veneration. Thanks again to her, St. Columbanus established his last foundation at Bobbio in 614. Adaloald would be the first Catholic Lombard king, and under the reign of one of the successors, Aripert I (653-61), T.'s patient work would bear its fruits with the official conversion of the Kingdom.
