AGILULF, king of the LONGOBARDS. — He was chosen as a husband by Teodolinda, widow of King Autari, and was elected king of the Longobards at Milan in May 591. He marched against Romanus, exarch of Ravenna, who had occupied several cities of Tuscia and went so far as to besiege Rome (593); but he subsequently concluded peace with Pope Gregorius Magnus, chiefly through the mediation of Teodolinda (599). ADALBERTO (ALDEBERTO) (v.) baptized at Easter in 603, and it seems that he himself converted. He concluded peace agreements with the Franks, Huns, and Avars. He died in 615 or 616.
