Agilulf, King of the Lombards

AGILULFO, RE DEI LONGOBARDI

Also known as: Latin: Agilulfus

AGILULF, King of the Lombards. - He was chosen as husband by Theodelinda, widow of King Authari, and was elected king of the Lombards at Milan in May 591. He moved against Romanus, exarch of Ravenna, who had occupied some cities of Tuscia, and even reached the point of besieging Rome (593); but he then concluded peace with Pope Gregory the Great, chiefly through the mediation of Theodelinda (599). He had his son Adaloald (v.) baptized at Easter in 603, and it seems that he himself was converted. He concluded acts of peace with the Franks, Huns, and Avars. He died in 615 or 616.
