AIGREFEUILLE, Guillaume (the Younger). - Cardinal b. at Saint-Exupéry in 1339, d. at Avignon on 13 Jan. 1401. He studied at Toulouse where, in 1365, he became a doctor in decrees. On 12 May 1367 he was created, by Pope Urban V, cardinal of the title of St. Stephen in the Round and on 19 Oct. 1369 he was elected "camerarius" of the college of cardinals, an office he kept all his life. He took part in the conclave that followed the death of Gregory XI, and had an important part in the events that led to the great schism. He was sent by Clement VII to Germany to the emperor Wenceslaus, but despite the letters written in his favor by the duke of Anjou and by Charles V, he was unable to obtain a safe-conduct. Indeed he found himself forced to leave also Metz, where he had gone, and to settle at Freiburg im Breisgau, where he remained from 1381 to 1384. The following year he returned to Avignon, where he later died. He was buried in the chapel of St. Stephen which he had had built in the church of St. Martial. He wrote a treatise against Benedict XIII and Sermones in laudem beatae Virginis.
