AIGUANI (ANGUANI, ANCHIANI), MICHELE. - Distinguished Carmelite theologian of the 14th century, better known under the name “Michele di Bologna” because he was a native of Bologna. He completed his studies in Paris, where for several years (1357 ff.) he was lecturer on the Sentences; subsequently he became doctor of the University of Bologna (1371) and provincial of the province of Bologna (1375–79). Appointed by Urbano VI vicar general of the Order (1380), and reconfirmed in 1385, he was deposed by him in 1386; in the following years he held the chair of Sacred Scripture at the University of Bologna, where he died on 16 November 1400.
His works are: 1) Quaestiones... in IV libros Sententiarum (Milan 1510, Venice 1622); 2) Commentarii in Psalmos Davidicos, published under the name “Incogniti,” 3 vols. (Alcalà 1524, Lyons 1581, 1588–89; 1603, 1610, 1651; Venice 1600–1602; 1608; Paris 1613, 1616; 1626); 3) Dictionarium Sacrum (2 vols., MS 1652, University Library of Bologna); 4) Alphabetum theologicum (MS, Coll. S. Alberto, Rome); 5) Lectura, seu Catena in Psalmos (Cologne 1480, 1483, 1487, 1554; Reutlingen 1488, 1494; Rouen 1504); 6) In Psalmos poenitentiales lectura (MS, formerly at Genoa in the ancient convent of the Carmelites); 7) Tabula in libros Sententiarum (MS 1081, Avignon, Mus. Calvet); 8) Tractatus Conceptionis gloriosae Mariae (MS F. II, 21, Library of Mantua), and many other unpublished commentaries on Sacred Scripture.
