AGNES of Merania. – Daughter of Duke Berthold of Merania, she married in 1196 Philip II Augustus of France, who had repudiated his first wife Ingeborg, sister of Canute VI of Denmark. Since this repudiation had incurred the interdict on France from Innocent III (1198), A. was compelled to retire to the castle of Poissy, where she died in August 1201. Her two children were legitimated by the same Pope. In her memory Philip II founded a Benedictine abbey at St-Corentin-les-Mantes, where indeed A. was buried.
