Agnes of Merania

AGNESE DI MERANIA

Also known as: German: Agnes von Meranien; Agnes of Andechs-Merania; French: Agnès de Méranie

AGNES OF MERANIA. - Daughter of Duke Berthold of Merania, in 1196 she married Philip II Augustus of France, who had repudiated his first wife Ingeborg, sister of Canute VI of Denmark. Since this repudiation had provoked, on the part of Innocent III, the interdict upon France (1198), A. was forced to withdraw to the castle of Poissy, where she died in August 1201. Her two children were legitimized by the same Pope. To honor her memory Philip II founded a Benedictine abbey at St-Corentin-les-Mantes, where A. was in fact buried.
