PAUL THE DEACON. - Monk and historian. Nearly all that is known of his life is drawn almost exclusively from his own works. Of noble Lombard family established at Cividale del Friuli since the conquest, he was the son of Warnefrit and of Teudelinda; he himself recalls his brother Arichi and a sister who was a nun.

He was educated at the court of Pavia, where he had as his teacher a certain Flavian, a nephew of the grammarian Felix, and he belonged to the palace clergy. Protected by King Rachis, he then remained in the service of King Desiderius, who entrusted him with the education of his daughter Adelperga and accompanied her on her first journey to Benevento when she went to be married to Duke Arichi. Towards 768 he dedicated to her his Historia Romana, a continuation of that of Eutropius, brought down to the time of Justinian. The fall of the Lombard kingdom reduced Paul’s family to poverty and forced him himself to take refuge by becoming a monk at Monte Cassino, which was then flourishing more than ever; these misfortunes induced Paul in 782 to seek mercy for himself and his family from Charlemagne; the latter summoned him to his court as a teacher, alongside another

PAOLO DIACONO. - Monaco e storico.
