HERACLIUS I, Emperor of Byzantium. - He reigned from 610 to 641. He was crowned by the Byzantine patriarch Sergius. In 614 he undertook the counteroffensive against the Persians, who had devastated Jerusalem and carried off the Cross. The campaign, however, did not succeed. The attempt returned with good outcome in the years 632-24. He penetrated into Cappadocia, then into Armenia and therefore into Media. But even this time he had to fall back. Finally in 627 E. entered Persia again victorious and definitively defeated Chosroes II, who, killed by his own men, had as his successor Kawad. The latter had to accept the peace proposed by E., who imposed the freedom of Christian worship and the restitution of the wood of the Cross. E. in person brought it back in triumph to Jerusalem, which is commemorated with the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross (Sept. 14). E. seconded the religious policy of the patriarchs Sergius of Constantinople and Cyrus of Alexandria in favor of monothelitism, with the aim of finding a compromise between the orthodox and the monophysites.
