IŠOʿJAHB II. - Nestorian Katholikos, b. at Gēdālā, consecrated in 628 and d. between 643 and 644. In a time troubled by the wars between the Persians and Heraclius and by the invasion of the Arabs, he gave proof of uncommon ability. He presented himself before Heraclius at Aleppo and, in exchange for certain concessions to the decrees of the Council of Chalcedon, obtained permission to communicate in sacris with the Byzantines, which earned him reproaches from the party of the fervent Nestorians. Then, in the face of the advance of the Muslims, he withdrew to Karkā de Bēt Sēlōk. I. left several writings of secondary interest.
