LEO VI, EMPEROR OF THE EAST, called the Wise. — Greek emperor (856-916). He deposed Patriarch Photius in 886, and on the occasion of the Tetragamy controversy, Patriarch Nicholas known as the Mystic. L. is the author of juridical texts or laws and of sermons, among which the discourse in memory of his father Basil.
