At the age of 14 he entered the monastery of Montecassino, where he was received by Abbot Desiderius, who set him on the path to knowledge of the Holy Scriptures and made him librarian of the monastery.
By order of Abbot Oderisius he wrote in three books a Chronica monasterii Casinensis, from St. Benedict to Abbot Desiderius, later Pope Victor III (1086-87), whose life from chap. 34 of book III was continued by Peter the Deacon (1st ed., Venice 1513, but incomplete; the 1st complete ed., Paris 1668, reproduced by L. Muratori, in RIS, IV,
Milan 1723, pp. 151-628 and in MGH, Script., VII, 574 ff. He also wrote Vita s. Mennatis. Peter the Deacon also recorded his Sermones and the Historia peregrinarum.
