LOHER (LOER), DIETRICH. — Carthusian, born at Hoogstraeten (Antwerp) around 1490, died in the Carthusian monastery of Würzburg on 26 August 1554. He entered the monastery at Cologne (1518), where he was joined by his brothers Bruno and Hugo, attracted by his example. In 1530 he succeeded Lansperg in the office of vicar, and in the same year was elected prior of the Carthusian monastery of Hildesheim.
By this time he was already known throughout Europe for the major role he had played in the edition of the works of Dionysius the Carthusian. In 1543 he was elected prior at Buxheim and visitor of the province of Lower Germany. Charles V chose him as his confessor; bishops, princes, and great lords turned to him for advice.
Among the editions of works by others and of his own works or translations, the following should be mentioned: 1) Dionysii Cortusiani... fidissimus cathalogus (Cologne 1530 and 1532); 2) Monotesaron, idest unum continuum Evangelium quatuor Evangelistarum (there 1531, 1546, 1586); 3) Praestantissima quaedam miracula, quae Bruxelles... circa venerabilem Eucharestiam, fiunt (there 1532); 4) Die groote evangelische Peerle, etc. (Utrecht 1535; Antwerp 1539, 1639), a work of piety composed by a servant of God and published for the first time by L.; 5) Psalterium latinum et germanicum fideliter traductum (Cologne 1535, 1536, 1562); 6) Theologiae mysticae... lucida demonstratio (there 1569).
