LOHER (LOER), DIETRICH. - Carthusian, b. at Hoogstraten (Antwerp) ca. 1490, d. in the charterhouse of Würzburg on 26 Aug. 1554. He entered the monastery at Cologne (1518), where he was joined by his brothers Bruno and Hugo, attracted by his example. In 1530 he succeeded Lansperg in the office of vicar, and in 1530 he was elected prior of the charterhouse of Hildesheim.
At this time he was already known throughout Europe for the leading part he had played in the edition of the works of Denis the Carthusian. In 1543 he was elected prior at Buxheim and visitor of the province of Lower Germany. Charles V chose him as his confessor; bishops, princes and great lords turned to him for advice.
Among the editions of others' works and of his own works or translations, the following should be remembered: 1) Dionysii Cortusiani... fidissimus cathalogus (Cologne 1530 and 1532); 2) Monotesaron, idest unum continuum Evangelium quatuor Evangelistarum (ibid. 1531, 1546, 1586); 3) Praestantissima quaedam miracula, quae Bruxelles... circa venerabilem Eucharestiam, fiunt (ibid. 1532); 4) Die groote evangelische Peerle, etc. (Utrecht 1535; Antwerp 1539, 1639), a work of piety composed by a servant of God and published for the first time by L.; 5) Psalterium latinum et germanicum fideliter traductum (Cologne 1535, 1536, 1562); 6) Theologiae mysticae... lucida demonstratio (ibid. 1569).
