LONGO, MARIA LORENZA, venerabile. - Foundress of the Capuchin nuns, originally from Catalonia, born in Naples in 1463, died there on 21 Dec. 1542.

Left a widow, she settled her three children and devoted herself entirely to works of charity, under the spiritual direction of St. Cajetan of Thiene, having a vast building erected capable of receiving every kind of sick and incurable person (1519). She then founded a monastery (commonly known under the name of the Thirty-Three Nuns), of Poor Clare religious who later took the name of Capuchins because they wished to be inspired by the reform of the Capuchins and as such were approved by Paul III with the "motu proprio" Cum monasterium of 10 Dec. 1538. The cause for her beatification was introduced in 1852.
