LUZZAGO, ALESSANDRO. - A Brescian nobleman, one of the most significant figures of the Catholic Reformation in Brescia, b. in October 1551, d. in Milan on 7 May 1602, attended by Card. F. Borromeo.
Having earned a doctorate in theology at Padua (1586), he would have wished to enter among the Jesuits, his teachers, but, also to satisfy his father, he was neither a religious nor a priest, but rather a lay apostle, and he spent all his time in reviving the pious institutions of Brescia and in creating new ones.
His principal foundations are: the Schools of Christian doctrine; the Company of St. Mary of Mercy of the Prisoners, modeled on the statute of the Roman Confraternity of St. John Decollato; the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, for organizing the moral forces of the most zealous gentlemen of the city; the House of God for beggars. He infused new life into the pious institution of the Advocates for the causes of the poor, founded by Domenico Bollani. In all of L.'s apostolic activity, in accordance with the spirit of the Society of Jesus, one discerns a constant subordination of contemplation to action. His cause of beatification was begun by Fr. Bartolomeo Fornoni; the acts are preserved in the anti-sacristy of the church of the Pace in Brescia.
