MAGALOTTI, UGOLINO, BEATO

MAGALOTTI, Ugolino, Blessed. - Hermit of the Third Order of St. Francis, b. near Camerino at the beginning of the 14th century, d. there on 11 Dec. 1373.

Left motherless, he was piously raised by his father and even as a boy found his delight in reading the sacred books. When his father too died, he enrolled in the Third Order of St. Francis; he gave all that he had to the poor and reduced himself to the eremitic life, afflicting his body with harsh penances. He lived many years in contemplation, in a reputation for great holiness. His cult was approved by Pius IX on 4 Dec. 1855, and Leo XIII approved his Mass and Office on 9 Dec. 1882.
