LONGO, FRANCESCO. - Capuchin theologian, born at Corigliano Calabro in 1562, died at Rome on 21 Dec. 1625. A religious of the Roman province, he was lecturer in theology, provincial of Cosenza (1612–15), and visitor of the province of Lyons (1616).
In the first volume (De Deo uno et trios) of an unfinished S. Bonaventurae summa theologica (Rome 1622), he represents, among the Bonaventurists of the Order, the eclectic attempt to align the doctrine of the Seraphic Doctor with Thomism and Scotism. He subsequently revised the Tractatus de casibus reservatis iuxta regulam Clementis VIII (Lyons 1616; 2nd ed., Cologne 1619; 3rd ed., Lyons 1623), summarized ecclesiastical history in the Breviarium chronologicum pontificum et conciliorum omnium (Lyons 1623), and the history of synods in the Summa conciliorum omnium (Antwerp 1623), which was completed by others (Paris 1639; 3rd ed. there, 1645). His ascetical works include the Horologio spirituale intorno alla Passione di N. S. Gesù Christo (Venice 1621) and the Horologio spirituale ovvero venti quattro meditazioni sopra tutti i principali misteri della vita della gloriosa Vergine Maria (Rome 1625; French trans., Lyons 1628).
